How do you read a Smws code?
The first number of the SMWS code is the unique distillery number, these numbers are allocated by the order the first cask of a distillery is bottled. The second number refers to the cask ie, the 6th cask from that distillery they have bottled.

When was my Glenfiddich bottled?

What does B28 on whiskey mean?
That code is just the local distributor’s registration code. It could be bottled in the same plant, but does not necessarily mean it’s the same whiskey inside. Bells & J&B are both B28, so they’re imported by the same company. If the number starts with A, like Richelieu, it’s locally bottled.

In this example, it’s a single malt whisky from distillery 46, and it’s the 72th single cask approved by panel from that distillery in our history.
