Hold the slider grip firmly between thumb and forefinger and push down towards the slider grip. The resulting spring action will release the lead. Unscrew the refill nut. Insert the new lead into the lead holder, ensuring it is pushed fully into place.

Yard-O-Led customarily ship out their pencils with 12 three-inch HB leads (12 x 3″ = 36″, or a yard of lead), but if you prefer a softer, darker line B is for you. If a lighter line (and longer lasting lead) is what you are after, H are the leads of your choice.

If the mechanism can’t be opened up, blockages can usually be cleared by holding the pencil tip-up, with the button held down against your desk, and feeding a cleaning pin in through the tip to push any little bits of lead out from where they’re stuck.
Why is the lead falling out of my pencil?
In the tip of a mechanical pencil there is a rubber seal type of thing. And if that falls out then the lead will just fall through. If you have a pencil that is worth it then you can buy a new tip and it should work fine.
