Edge banding is sometimes a thin strip of veneer, with adhesive on one side, that covers raw and exposed sides of particleboard and plywood. In other cases, edge banding is solid wood (usually from scraps) that is applied with glue or by making a groove in the piece of wood it needs to fit.

How do you trim edgebanding?
To trim the ends of the banding, it’s easiest to stand the panel with the banded edge against a workbench. Hold a 1″ chisel tightly against the side edge of the panel and strike the chisel handle with a mallet. This should cleanly slice off any banding that overhangs.
What can I use instead of edge banding?
Alternatives include:
- using wood filler to smooth out the edge, sanding and then painting the edge.
- use screen molding or “nosing” which places a thin piece of wood you cut then glue and nail to the edge of the plywood. Apply nail filler and sand it smooth to hide the edge.
